Wheaton Montessori Elementary: What Does it Mean to Be Human?

Categories: Elementary Program / For Parents

Life Lessons in the Wheaton Montessori Elementary Class

During the elementary years in a Montessori classroom, history is “very much the backbone of education.” During this time, students learn what “being a human” has meant over time.  From understanding a human’s fundamental needs to celebrating artistic expression, history plays a part in driving lessons in the classroom.

According to Mrs. Fortun, Wheaton Montessori Elementary teacher:  “We want the elementary children to ponder what it means to be human.  Where we are, where we came from, and where we are going.  We have hope for the possibilities.  Hopefully when they are thinking about their future vocation, they’re thinking, ‘What can I do? What is my task? What service can I give?’  We want them to understand that none of us has an understudy.  What we choose to do, gets done; what we do not, goes undone.  We are all here for a purpose.”
