Summer Reading: Bring out the “Beach Reads!”
Over the summer we all enjoy a good “beach read:” a book that is fun and not too challenging. For me that has always been the latest Nicholas Spark title. “The Notebook,” anyone? I guess I enjoy a good cry; if you have read any of his books you know what I am talking about!
You don’t even need a beach for a good “beach read!” Addy, a Lower Elementary student, enjoying her beach read.
Kids can enjoy a “beach read” too. There are many series out there written for kids that seem to us (parents) as the same story written over and over again. We can’t understand why a child would want to go through a whole series when the first one didn’t even seem like high quality children’s literature. Speaking from experience, children enjoy reading through the series. To them, it is familiar, comforting, and enjoyable.
From an educator perspective, reading through a series, no matter how repetitive, helps build your child’s reading stamina (reading for longer periods of time) as well as helping them learn to draw conclusions from the text. It also gets a child familiar with the plot structure of the text since many series seem to repeat it in each book. After reading one or two in the series, your child can probably predict what will happen next. They are reading and draw conclusions about the characters that are (by now) so familiar to them. These are both great skills that readers use. So go ahead and let them enjoy the “beach reads” this summer!
