Wheaton Montessori News
Especially during Staff Week, the needs of our community are at the forefront of our minds as we prepare for a new year. A part of creating healthy, happy, and peaceful classroom communities in any authentic Montessori community is the focus on Grace and Courtesy lessons. Grace and Courtesy Lessons are an integral part of our curriculum. At Wheaton Montessori School, grace and courtesy lessons are a daily practice in all of our communities: Primary, Elementary, and Adolescent.
While we think about welcoming new students into our communities – or returning students into new communities, we focus on a few key areas of grace and courtesy. We focus on being welcoming, inclusive, and helping children adjust to their new environments. We want our students to know that they are able to try new things in a safe setting. We spend Staff Week establishing physical environments that are well-prepared and constant for our students.
During the first few days of school, we also focus on the emotional environments for our students so that we know that they, too, are well-prepared and constant for our students. To that end, we practice and rehearse Grace and Courtesy Lessons that give examples of language to use to include and invite our friends to work with us, play with us, and enjoy lunch with us.
In these examples of Grace and Courtesy Lessons, Mrs. Carrillo and her classroom assistant Ivania demonstrate several polite ways in which to respond to an invitation from a classmate. Students take turns being both the invited student and the student offering the invitation.
