Mrs. Mitten’s After-School Art Class
Wheaton Montessori parent and local artist Betsy Mitten is at it again! Her second session of after-school art classes has begun with elementary students. Mrs. Mitten has offered these special classes for interested students over the last year. They fill quickly and we enjoy seeing the progression of the creative work!
Each week, Mrs. Mitten sends parents a summary of the weekly class focus and pictures of the students creating. Here is the recap from a recent class:
“Tuesday’s class was all about colorful native birds. We drew several species of Woodpeckers, a pair of Blue Jays, and two nesting American Goldfinch. I especially enjoyed our lively bird conversation and the woodpecker stories! Our medium was chalk pastel pencil on pastel paper.
After a warm up sketching exercise and conversation about feet and beak adaptations, we headed to the tables to experiment with the chalk pastel pencils. We practiced several color blending techniques before starting the final drawing. You’ll notice that special attention was given to adding details and backgrounds in the drawings.
We finished the class with a favorite drawing game.”
